CHANGEABLE WORLDS

spielzeit’europa 11|12

spielzeit’europa 11|12 invites you to its eighth edition – the final one under our artistic direction –in the freshly renovated Haus der Berliner Festspiele for a programme which focuses across a wide range of theatre on issues of human conduct and collective responsibility. Against a background of the unforeseen consequences of natural disasters and political manoeuvres it is important to view a fragmented world as connected and complete – and one which can be changed, as the »Arab spring« clearly shows.
This year’s season of theatre and dance will open with a special creation for Berlin: Le Savali: Berlin. This unique collaboration between artists from the Pacific and Berlin directed by Lemi Ponifasio establishes new bonds of encounters from the other end of the world in order to create present moments of community.
The investigation of madness and the search for truth and the inspirational power of words are addressed by the texts by Heiner Müller, Arne Lygre, Bernard-Marie Koltès, Toni Morrison, George Courteline, Pierre Henri Cami and Daniil Kharms, which occupy central roles in the works of Antonio Latella, Peter Sellars, Lloyd Newson, Barbara Wysocka, Stéphane Braunschweig and Andrea Breth. A powerfully visual creation by Romeo Castellucci together with a choreographic rock concert by Hofesh Shechter provide the finale of this last spielzeit’europa in January.
All those who place no boundaries on their thinking and thereby make the changes in the Arab world possible are foremost in our thoughts: as a utopian preface we are presenting as a pre-programme in September Yahia Yaïch Amnesia by Jalila Baccar and Fadhel Jaïbi from Tunis.
Our thanks as always to Bernd Neumann, Minister of State for Culture and The Media, and especially to you, our valued audience for your tireless interest in encounters with our artists and guests from around the world.

Warmest regards
