Grzegorz Jarzyna, Medea

Medea, a Georgian aristocrat, and her husband Jason, an ambitious manager in the energy industry, arrive with their two children in Vienna, where they hope to make a new home after several years abroad. An impressive apartment has recently been bought, nothing seems to stand in the way of them enjoying life in the economic paradise of a rich Western European country… then comes divorce and a tragedy begins. Medea, the foreigner from the East, lonely and vulnerable – a myth in contemporary terms told and staged by Grzegorz Jarzyna, one of Poland’s most important young theatre directors whose discovery with Doctor Faustus was hailed loudly in 1999 at what was then the Berliner Festwochen. His Medea is »sweeping emoptional cinema … and at the same time a mysterious psychological thriller with echoes of Hitchcock and Polanski« (Süddeutsche Zeitung), performed by an excellent Burgtheater company who combine a level of emotion unusual in the German theatre and the melancholy of Georgian music in acting out this ancient myth as both a fatal family disaster and an East-West drama at the same time.
