The Season 07|08

»Paradise Now« – this was the anarchist/pacifist call to change the world with which the legendary Living Theatre moved beyond the Summer of Love and into the Sixties as we now remember them. Hippies, hash, happenings, protest against the Vietnam war, communes, free love and the unity of »life, revolution and theatre« (Julian Beck). What remains of those emotions and utopias of a better world? Were these the last flickers of life before the leaden Seventies, before the »agony of the real« (Jean Baudrillard), as transient as the flower children themselves?
Now, forty years on, our collective lack of consciousness seems finally to have come to an end. In a time when climate change, wars of faith and economic defence strategies have created political dynamite, the movement has reformed. Is it possible to change the world again?
Under the title PARADISE NOW the next spielzeit’europa 07/08 recognizes a spirit of the times equally appropriate to the memories and fictions of the Sixties generation and to the desires and utopias of today. In theatre and in the visual arts paradigm shifts are already taking place leading away from abstraction towards telling specific stories, which play with varying and reducing the speed of events and which have the courage to tackle emotions. spielzeit’europa, presented this year for the fourth time in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele as a unique permanent festival in the German-speaking world, will investigate these phenomena: it will be a search for paradise in the theatre of the present.
spielzeit’europa will open with Stifter’s Things, the latest piece by Heiner Goebbels, an audio space inspired by the natural descriptions in the writings of Adalbert Stifter; will present the World Premieres of Alvis Hermanis’ The Sound of Silence and DV8’s To Be Straight With You, both searches for ideological and religious freedom, and will rock with Carole King. Queen of the Beach in the Bornemann Bar, will turn Vivaldi’s Four Seasons into a dance of pure joy choreographed by Angelin Preljocaj, and will show theatre as a mad celebration of the living and the dead – in Les Paravents – and as sweeping emotional cinema – in Gregorz Jarzyna’s Medea. The season will be completed by an enchantingly beautiful duo, a remarkable wordless encounter between Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant in Push.
Our thanks go to Bernd Neumann, Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and to Curator of the Capital Cultural Fund (Hauptstadtkulturfonds) Elmar Weingarten for their generous support – and to you, our audience, whom we once again wish to stimulate with our programme. PARADISE NOW – a prospect so wonderful it can only be created in the theatre. We invite you most warmly to accompany spielzeit’europa on this year’s search for paradise.
