Igniting the imagination

As we become able to look at our own lives and the world around us in ever more complex ways, so the means which theatre has at its disposal in order to present that world become ever more diverse. Amid this growing plethora of forms, we remain hungry for new content: new stories and new themes which are capable of igniting the imagination. Stories which are able to present the great issues of our times in ways which touch us. But where are those stories? And who can inspire us?

We are just as interested in the work of unknown dramatists as we are in new plays by established writers. We are willing to consider recommendations from agents and look at unpublished texts. We will consider manuscripts in all languages and have them translated. There’s only one condition: the plays must not have been performed, or in the case of international plays, they must not have been produced in Germany. A jury consisting of writers, dramaturgs and directors will select six plays for the playmarket.

The selected plays will be given staged readings at the Theatertreffen between 6th and 22nd May. These will be organized by experienced directors and dramaturgs working with the writers, and will be open to both members of the public and theatre professionals. After the last reading one play will awarded with the Prize for New Drama, donated by the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung.
This year, in addition to the six finalists, other authors whose talent impresses the jury will be invited to take part in a one week workshop with playwright and dramaturg John von Düffel (Thalia Theater, Hamburg).
