Igniting The imagination – New plays from Europe

7 dramatic discoveries for the 2005 Stückemarkt

After the tireless reading of 551 plays from 33 countries and extensive discussions, the five members of the jury – Albert Ostermaier, Christiane Pohle, Slobodan Šnajder, Guntram Brattia und Iris Laufenberg – have now successfully completed their search for new plays from across the whole of Europe.

The jury have selected four plays from Germany, one from Austria and two from Croatia, of which one is written in Croatian and one in English:

Nicolai Borger (Germany)
Plastik (Plastic)

Stefan Finke (Germany)
Landmetzgerei Hümmel (Hümmel Country Butchers)
| further information

Juliane Kann (Germany)
Blutiges Heimat (Bloody Homeland)
| further information

Nina Mitrović (Croatia)
This bed is too short or just fragments
| further information

Sibila Petlevski (Croatia)
Ledeni General (Ice General)
| further information

Oliver Schmaering (Germany)
Seefahrerstück (Seafarer’s play)
| further information

Johannes Schrettle (Austria)
Dein Projekt liebt dich (Your project loves you) (working title)
| further information

The seven selected plays provide clear evidence of the thematic and formal variety of the submissions. Human relationships – particularly of love – are one prominent theme but broader political concerns are also addressed, via apocalyptic visions of the future, heroin smuggling in the name of humanitarian aid and a theatrical journey through the history of seafaring. Two of the plays present unsentimental portraits of life in small communities and claustrophobic family situations.

The Stückemarkt will take place in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele as part of the Theatertreffen. Precise dates will be published together with the overall Theatertreffen programme by the beginning of April.

We will be happy to respond to your queries and put you in contact with the invited authors. The selected plays are available from the press department – subject to the author’s permission.

7 Young Writers join water-borne workshop

Once again this year as part of the Stückemarkt there is another workshop led by John von Düffel. In addition to the readings of works by selected authors the jury – Albert Ostermaier, Christiane Pohle, Guntram Brattia, Slobodan Šnajder and Iris Laufenberg – invite seven young writers of evident talent to take part in the workshop:

Nuran David Calis (Munich)
Nina Ender (Berlin)
Matthias Frahm (Halle/Saale)
Simon Froehling (Zurich)
Thomas Lilge (Berlin)
Nikola Richter (Berlin)
Sobo Swobodnik (Berlin)

The participants will spend four days developing their texts on the specially hired tt talente ship on the Spree, the Landwehrkanal and the Muggelsee. They will also be addressing the motto of this year’s Theatertreffen, tt clubhome 05 and write mini-dramas on the theme home and identity.
The mini-dramas created during the workshop will be presented on the ship on Tuesday 17th May under the title “Miniatures of home”.
