In 1967 the Ukrainian born pianist Misha Mengelberg set up the Instant Composers Pool in the Netherlands. Together with drummer Han Bennink and saxophonist Willem Breuker (who left the group in 1973) it was a national reservoir for like-minded improvisers.
Mengelberg and Bennink had drawn attention to themselves in 1964 in Eric Dolphy’s rhythm section, documented in Last Date – Eric Dolphy, a film by Hans Hylkema. The alt-saxophonist, flautist and bass-clarinettist had died shortly after under tragic circumstances in June 1964. During a guest performance at a club in Berlin he passed away.
With emphasis on their European roots the ICP Orchestra has consequently been looking for connections to the American jazz avant-garde, e. g. on Two Days in Chicago (1998). Their appearance at the Berlin Jazz Festival is dedicated to Eric Dolphy.
