datamatics [ver.2.0] is the second audiovisual concert in Ikeda’s datamatics series‚ an art project that explores the potential to perceive the invisible multi–substance of data that permeates our world. Using pure data as a source for sound and visuals, datamatics combines abstract and mimetic presentations of matter, time and space in a breathtakingly accomplished work. Projecting dynamic, computer-generated imagery – in pared down black and white with striking colour accents – Ikeda’s intense yet minimal graphic renderings of data progress through multiple dimensions. Ikeda creates a soundtrack that reflects the imagery through meticulous layering of sonic components, producing immense and apparently boundless acoustic spaces. The technical dynamics of the piece, such as its extremely fast frame rates and variable bit depths, continue to challenge and explore the thresholds of our perceptions.

From radical turntablism (Otomo Yoshihide) to laptop music innovation (Numb), via classic instrument hijacking (Sakamoto Hiromichi), Tokyo’s avant-garde music scene is internationally known for its boldness.
The documentary film We Don’t Care About Music Anyway … introduces some of the greatest musicians of this scene and offers a kaleidoscopic view of Tokyo, confronting music and noise, sound and image, reality and representation, documentary and fiction. “We don’t care about music anyway...” in a manner of speech, “we make it and that’s all... .” Beyond the music and beyond its performance, the future and mode of existence of a city and society as a whole are in motion.
Yet, experimental music has to be heard and seen live, it is a unique “now and here” creation process. This is the reason why the producers of the film We Don’t Care About Music Anyway… decided to create a live music tour event. This gives European audiences the incredible and unusual opportunity to enjoy live performances by the musicians featured in the film and also to experience some of the beats and sounds that move Tokyo.
At MaerzMusik we will encounter performances and improvisations by the musicians Otomo Yoshihide, Sakamoto Hiromichi, L?K?O, Kirihito and Umi No Yeah !!
