Yutaka Makino
Performative installation (2010) GP

A co-production by MaerzMusik | Berliner Festspiele and Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD.
In collaboration with Berghain

Japanese-born Yutaka Makino was a guest of the German Academic Exchange Program (DAAD) in 2010. Conflux is part of a series of his works that explicitly tackle the phenomenon of perception and is based on concepts that he developed from current research and his own experiments on dynamic systems and emergent patterns. Conflux was inspired by James J. Gibson’s Theory of psycho-ecological perception, which focuses on the perceiver’s interaction with particular properties of their environment.
Makino creates a visually and acoustically artificial environment, which makes for a unique experience in which shifting modes of perception are made tangible – from the perception of the surroundings to body temperature. The spectator is an active part of the installation.
