Now based in Berlin, the Icelandic artist and musician Egill Sæbjörnsson combines elements of installation and performance, video and live music in his work. In complex, poetic narrative spatial constellations he often becomes part of the setting himself, along with other artists. Animation, video projection, live music, sound, drawings and daily, real-life objects combine to recount narratives, in which Sæbjörnsson intertwines the various levels of reality, always with a penchant for the absurd.
In his installations and performances he playfully questions the relationship between notation, instrument, musician and sound. In What Got You Here, Won’t Get You There, in collaboration with the Brazilian director and actor Marcia Moraes, he particularly addresses and explores this aspect of his work in a multi-dimensional performance installation.
This work was created in the context of the event series “Works of Music by Visual Artists”, which has been produced by Freunde Guter Musik Berlin in collaboration with the Nationalgalerie Berlin since 1999. MaerzMusik has been a partner of this project since 2002.
