J’accuse (I Accuse), a monumental epic film by the French film pioneer Abel Gance (1889–1981), is one of the first pacifist works in cinematic history and is one of the most technically innovative films of his time. The film agitates and shocks. It recounts the melodrama of a love triangle during the madness of the war. Abel Gance did service during the First World War and filmed actual war scenes that were adapted for the film. In 1922 the film was shortened and edited. Despite this, the original version of the film could be restored in 2009. For this occasion, Gary Lucas and Reza Namavar composed a subtle and agitating soundtrack that was presented by Ensemble Caméléon and the guitarist Gary Lucas at the premiere of the restored film in Amsterdam.
