Stückemarkt

Ledeni General (Ice General)
Sibila Petlevski – Ledeni General (Ice General)
German translation by Dr. Alida Bremer

The play cannot be shown at the Stückemarkt.

Following Europe’s destruction in a nuclear war, it falls to a community cut off from the outside world to determine the General’s fate. At the centre of this mythic play “Ice General” lies a startlingly modern question, one which is felt particularly keenly in the author’s native land: the question of crime and guilt in times of war.

Sibila Petlevski, born in Zagreb in 1964, counts among the important Croatian playwrights, authors of screenplays and novels, literary critics and translators. Moreover, she works as a professor and director of the drama institute at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb. Until 2004 she was the chairperson of the Croatian Centre of the International PEN and also worked for PEN International. At present, she is the editor-in-chief of Literary Republika and writes for the literary magazine Sarajevo Notebooks. Among her many awards are the 1993 State Price for Arts and Literature and the prize for theoretical dramaturgy in 2001. Her poetry as well as excerpts from her novels have been translated into numerous languages. Sibila Petlevski has published a great number of books and taken part in prestigious international festivals of literature. She lives in Zagreb and Munich.
