War, lies, horror – it’s all part of the show. Every grubby and disreputable aspect of politics, which would have been kept strictly under wraps in an earlier time, is now better concealed in the glaring light of publicity. Desdemona, love, and jealousy are all relatively minor issues in this duel of two pop stars – we’re the ones who matter, the masses. Wolfram Koch’s Iago is a clever, late night talking head, whereas Alexander Scheer as Othello demonstrates the cultural and sexual potency of hybridity, capable of forcing admiration out of people. The considerable intelligence in Stefan Pucher’s interpretation of “Othello” lies in the subtle political commentaries which arise out of its aggressive interpretation of political and racial stereotypes.
