it’s spring, it’s May, it’s the Theatertreffen

This year as ever, in the space of three weeks in Berlin in May, the Theatertreffen will present the season’s ten notable productions from the German-speaking theatre. The performances selected by a seven-strong jury will be offered up to scrutiny and debate in the fresh, clear light of spring, provoking thought and discussion about the current state of German-speaking theatre.
For the first time the Theatertreffen will bring together a variety of different events under the banner tt talent. tt talent aims to promote emerging talents in three different ways:
tt international forum – now in its forty-first year, this international forum for young theatre professionals which is open to young theatremakers from anywhere in the world working in spoken drama will take place from 8th to 22nd 2005.
tt playmarket– is looking for previously unpublished theatre texts from anywhere in Europe. The selected plays will be given public staged readings at the Theatertreffen organized by experienced directors and dramaturgs working with the writers. All scripts must be submitted by 31st December 2004.
tt festival newspaper! – For the first time the Theatertreffen paper will offer young critics a unique opportunity to write comprehensive and detailed theatre coverage. The editorial team will consist of experienced editors, well-known critics and designers and will appear in eight editions as a supplement to the Berliner Zeitung in collaboration with the UdK.

Another thing to look forward to is the conversation series, tt playwright´s salon, which began so successfully this year with Tankred Dorst and Gert Jonke, and which will be continued in May 2005 when two more celebrated playwrights will be in conversation with dramaturg Joachim Lux.

The Haus der Berliner Festspiele’s spiegelBAR, foyer and flourishing garden will all be open, for the tt nightshows, tt nightmusic and also for the tt discussions with special guests.

We will also continue the successful collaboration with our media partner ZDFtheaterkanal as recordings give us the opportunity to cater for a much wider interest in high quality cultural events than performances alone can achieve.

As in all previous years, the finale will take the form of a public discussion with the jury, which offers a chance to praise, criticise or discuss anything and everything within the whole programme. The jury discussion is followed by the presentation of the Alfred Kerr Prize for Acting and the 3sat Theatertreffen Prize, which, together with the presentation of the Preussischer Seehandlung Theatre Prize, represents the culmination of the festival.

A warm welcome to audiences from Berlin and from around the world!
