Jazzfest Berlin

For over forty years, Berlin in early November has been a capital city of jazz. The Berlin Jazz Festival is a world renowned festival that presents all the manifold and diverse styles of jazz. The tightly arranged, varied programme is equally traditional and progressive, and has tended to focus in particular on big bands and large ensembles. This four-to-five-day »marathon of jazz« also sounds the spectacular final chord of each year in Berlin’s international jazz calendar.
Alongside the big American name artists the Berlin Jazz Festival also increasingly presents musicians from all quarters, artists whose music centres on crossing the borders between local folk traditions and global sounds and trends. In recent years the festival has set regional focuses and has thereby gained a reputation as a forum of European jazz.
The media partners ARD (consortium of public-law broadcasting institutions of the Federal Republic of Germany, a joint organization of Germany’s regional public-service broadcasters) and Deutschlandradio document the festival in concert recordings from all the various stages across the city, with its own theatre hall ‘Haus der Berliner Festspiele’ as the focal point of the festival.
